Harefield Primary School Curriculum Statement

Objectives

The objectives of our curriculum are to engage, develop and motivate our pupils to become successful contributors to society. We want our pupils to develop their knowledge, skills and interests in a variety of subjects that have depth, imagination and breadth to support them to achieve their future aspirations, in all areas of their lives.

Context

Our school is set in the context of a tight-knit community with little movement in and out of the estate. We have a high percentage of pupil premium children and a history of pupils entering Reception year with low oral starting points. Our vision is to provide the best all-round education for our pupils. The pupils in our cohort require overlearning of fundamental skills, in Maths and English with a key focus on fluency for Reading and Maths.

Our Curriculum Design

Our curriculum is comprehensibly planned and clearly sequenced with subjects following a consistent design. These are effectively adapted and developed to meet the needs of ALL pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and/ or Disabilities.

CONTENT - CONCEPTS - COMPONENTS

Our curriculum is designed using content from the National Curriculum/ RE syllabus and RSHE guidance, as well as content that supports the unique characteristics of our school community and locality, so that our pupils can thrive. This is delivered through key concepts – the big ideas and themes that thread through our curriculum subjects. These concepts are broken down into key components; the powerful knowledge in each concept and progress from Yr R to Yr 6, in order to build on prior learning and support pupils making strong links in their knowledge.

We know, through research, that in order for our pupils to “know more” and “remember more”, and ultimately achieve their best, that our pupils need to experience learning more than once, in different contexts, to become experts and develop a deep understanding, which will be embedded in their long-term memory. Our curriculum is designed to regularly return to previous learning, in order for pupils to retrieve knowledge from their long term memory and build on this, with the introduction of new learning.

Our values

At Harefield Primary School we are a Rights Respecting School where we value every child as an individual and agree with the United Nations that “Every child has the right to an education” (Article 28). The values that have guided our decisions about our curriculum are our PRIDE values: - Prepared, Respectful, Involved, Determined, Every day. Pupil engagement and enjoyment in learning is at the core of everything we do. We are determined to ensure that all children achieve the best possible progress across all areas of the curriculum. We promote British Values through our PSHE curriculum, assemblies and pupil voice.

The Harefield Community

Community involvement is an essential part of our curriculum as geographically, the estate is very close nit and we like to provide the pupils with as many opportunities as possible to know where they fit into the world and the community within and outside of Harefield.

We want our pupils leave Harefield Primary School knowing they will always be part of the Harefield family and will have the confidence, knowledge and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections within their learning journey and the wider world and become lifelong ambitious learners.
