Art Curriculum Statement

At Harefield Primary School, we deliver the Art Curriculum, following the National Curriculum.

Our Art curriculum’s intention is to create opportunities for children to experiment and practice a range of skills and techniques to broaden their knowledge of Art, entice curiosity and inspire.

Our emphasis is on drawing and painting skills, in response to our pupils needs. For example:

  • Encouraging our pupils (many from a highly deprived background) to explore their artistic skills through drawing and painting activities, we create opportunities for them to practice a broad range a skills which could be applied in extended areas of the curriculum, as well as to support well-being.

Our whole curriculum is comprehensibly planned and clearly sequenced and Art follows this consistent design, effectively adapting and developing to meet the needs of ALL pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and/ or Disabilities and those that are disadvantaged.

Our Art curriculum is taught by the class teacher, who will first revisit prior learning. We return to previous learning, in order for pupils to retrieve knowledge from their long-term memory and build on this, with the introduction of new knowledge. This is through observing and experimenting new skills and techniques, drawing upon previous learning. The pupils will then practise applying this knowledge to create their own art pieces and embed learning.

We use key CONCEPTS that are thread through our SUBJECT curriculum, from Yr R to Yr 6, in order to build on prior learning and support pupils making strong links in their knowledge, from previous learning.
